How Many Porta Johns Does a Job Site Need? OSHA Rules Explained

Toilets on a construction site aren't optional. OSHA's sanitation standard for construction, 29 CFR 1926.51, sets the minimum. Here's what it requires and how it plays out on a real site.

The OSHA minimum

Number of workers Minimum facilities
20 or fewer 1 toilet
20 or more 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers
200 or more 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers

The standard applies unless the crew has transportation readily available to nearby toilet facilities. On most residential and commercial jobs, that means a porta john on site.

What it looks like in practice

  • A small remodel crew of 3 to 8: one unit covers it.
  • A mid-size build with 25 to 40 people across trades: plan for at least two, and count every sub on site at peak, not just your own crew.
  • Long hours or hot weather: add capacity or service more often. New Orleans summers are hard on portable restrooms.

Placement

  • Level ground, so the unit doesn't tip or rock.
  • Close to the work but away from material staging and traffic lanes.
  • Truck access for servicing. If the service truck can't reach it, it doesn't get pumped.
  • Shade if possible, and away from the windows of occupied buildings next door.

Servicing

A unit that isn't serviced turns into a complaint fast. Plan regular pumping and restocking based on how many people use it, and increase it during peak trades. Ask when you book and we'll set a schedule that fits your crew size.

Don't forget handwashing

OSHA's general sanitation rules also call for washing facilities where workers handle certain materials, and in general, crews appreciate them. Ask about adding handwashing to the order.
