The Contractor's Checklist for Booking a Roll-Off
Six details that turn a dumpster order into a container on the right spot, on the right day, at the right price. Plus what SLDBE certification means for your bids.
A late or wrong-sized container stalls a crew faster than almost anything. These six details, given at booking, prevent nearly every delivery-day problem.
1. The material
Heavy (concrete, dirt, shingles, tile) or bulky (framing, drywall, cabinets)? It decides the size more than the volume does. Heavy goes in a 10-yard.
2. The size of the job
Square footage, number of rooms, roof squares and layers. A rough number is enough for us to size it.
3. The exact spot
Driveway, side yard, alley, street? Mark it with paint or cones. Allow about 60 feet by 10 feet with clear overhead space, and flag anything the driver should avoid, like a septic drainfield or fresh concrete.
4. Permits
If it's going on the street, get the right-of-way permit lined up before delivery. Who to call by town.
5. Dates and swaps
- Delivery date
- Expected fill date
- Whether you'll need swaps (full out, empty in) on a longer job
Planning swaps up front means you're not calling in a panic with debris on the ground.
6. Site contact
A name and number for whoever will be on site. If the driver has a question, a 30-second call beats a wrong drop.
Add porta johns to the same order
If the crew needs toilets, book them with the container. OSHA sets the minimum count. See how many porta johns a job site needs.
